The Pathway

The street-path is the main aspect of the project. The pathway is laid out along the apartments and available only for pedestrians .This place is a  social centre where residents meet. The flats are available directly from the street, the staircases are almost removed to initiate meetings of neighbours. The undertaken actions are to encourage the residents to create a sense of community and responsibility for the collective space.

The project is located near the center of Brzeg (Poland). The construction plot is surrounded by green areas and the Odra River. A wide staircase, a local pier and irregular poles allow daily contact with nature. Most of the apartments have a terrace with the view of the river or the orchard. One of the advantages of the project is combining features of multifamily and single family housing.

The triangular square is the beginning of the pathway and it is a  place of local services. The apartments have got different schemes but each flat has a kitchen window overlooking the street. Therefore, the sense of security increases on the housing estate. Within the street there are small vegetable gardens, walls and curbs in order to naturally arrange space in front of the apartments. The white buildings are made of brick. The reduced form of architecture is the background for social life and for changes made by the residents.

We decided to use this kind of graphic representation to emphasize human contribution to creating the buildings. Our architectural project is perceived not only as the buildings but also as the complex of interactions between people while simultaneously space gains its own specific character.





Who influences you graphically?

These graphics are the result of our continuous research. The main inspiration for the project is the theory of Open Form by Oskar Hansen. It presupposes that inhabitants form the surrounding space and the architecture is only the background for a human activity. We wanted to present various elements which assemble the social life on our pathway. Our approach to the visuals was not that strict as the working process was for us a kind of amusement.

What dictates your choice of colour palette?

We believe that project perception is strictly associated with a function so we used warm, natural colours which create cosy and snug space. Further, colourful items are set on plain, white elevations.

To what extent did the cultural fabric of Poland influence your graphics? 

It was typical for Polish folk culture to decorate home exteriors and emphasize a local distinctness. We think that nowadays this idea can be still actual by putting individual stuff on the estate. We embellished our images, adding plenty of elements like our ancestors who ornamented their houses.

You explore your proposal through all means of representation, do you trust that only in this way is it possible to fully convey the project’s themes and objectives?  

We worked on this project for about 5 months so it is natural that we planned this design in the complex way. We wanted to indicate that this project could be presumably constructed.


Kinga Łukasińska and Rebeka Czaja are both architecture students from Wroclaw University of Technology. Project ‘Back to the Future’ is their  first mutual work. They like working with public spaces and experimenting  with the graphics. When they don’t design,  they try to reach Seven Summits of Poland.
